# The 6 best HDR programs for real estate interiors, ranked (October 2026)

The best HDR software for real estate photography is Photomatix Pro: it merges as many brackets as you shoot, from RAW or JPEG, ships interior presets built for high-contrast rooms, and costs $99 once. Lightroom Classic is the pick if you already work in an Adobe catalog, and Luminar Neo is the pick for a one-time editor that also expands range from a single frame. easyHDR 3, Affinity and darktable follow, the last two free.

Six desktop programs that merge brackets, ranked for interiors. NovaHDR, which finishes merged images but does not merge, is listed under considered, not ranked.

_NovaHDR wrote this ranking. It sells a related finishing service and is listed under considered, not ranked, because it does not merge brackets._

## How we compared

HDR software here means a program that takes several exposures of the same view and merges them into one image with detail in both the window and the shadows. That is the first half of a real estate edit; color, white balance and matching rooms come after. We ranked only on what each vendor's own pages say about merging for interiors, checked on October 12, 2026, except Lightroom Classic's help page, which comes from an archived copy dated August 21, 2026.

NovaHDR wrote this page. It does not merge brackets, so it is not ranked here; it appears under considered, not ranked, and as one option for what to do after the merge. We did not run test merges for this ranking.

Interiors are the hardest HDR subject: a bright window, a dark corner and mixed light in one frame. So the criteria lean toward how many brackets a program takes, whether it handles RAW, whether it can merge a whole shoot in one go, and whether it is built with interiors in mind.

- **Bracket capacity**: Can it merge the 5 to 9 brackets a bright window needs?
- **Inputs**: Does it take my RAW files directly?
- **Batch merging**: Can I merge a whole property at once, or one view at a time?
- **Interior focus**: Does it ship presets or guidance for rooms with windows?
- **Cost of ownership**: One-time, subscription or free?

## The ranking

### 1. Photomatix Pro: Best HDR software for interiors

Photomatix Pro is the most interior-minded program here. HDRsoft's guidance for high-contrast rooms is at least 5 brackets at 2 EV spacing or 9 at 1 EV, and it ships presets named Natural and Interior 2, 3 and 4. It merges as many brackets as you need from JPEG, TIFF, DNG and RAW files from the major camera brands. The Pro 7 license is $99 once, never expires and covers several computers, and a $69 plug-in adds batch HDR merging from Lightroom. The trial never expires but watermarks its output, which makes it easy to test on a real shoot.

Offers:
- Unlimited brackets per merge
- Interior presets for real estate
- RAW support for major camera brands
- One-time license for several computers
- Batch HDR plug-in for Lightroom ($69)

Limits:
- Merging is only the start: color and room matching are still your job
- Batch merging from Lightroom is a separate purchase
- HDRsoft's own real estate claims are marketing, not test results

Price: $99 one-time (Pro 7); Pro Plus bundle $129 (checked 2026-10-12)

### 2. Adobe Lightroom Classic: Best inside an Adobe workflow

If your culling, keywording and export already happen in Lightroom Classic, its HDR Photo Merge keeps the merge in the same place. Select the brackets, choose Photo Merge then HDR, and it writes a DNG you keep editing like any raw file, with Auto Align for slight movement, Auto Tone as a starting point and four deghost levels. It can stack the brackets with the result to keep the catalog tidy. The Lightroom plan that includes Classic is listed at $11.99 a month on an annual plan billed monthly.

Offers:
- Merged DNG stays fully editable
- Auto Align, Auto Tone and deghost settings
- Stacks the brackets with the merged result
- Same catalog as the rest of your workflow

Limits:
- Subscription, desktop only
- The help page does not state accepted input types
- No interior presets of its own

Price: $11.99 a month, Lightroom (1TB), annual plan billed monthly (checked 2026-10-12)

### 3. Luminar Neo: Best one-time editor with HDR Merge

Luminar Neo builds HDR Merge into the editor: up to 10 bracketed RAW or JPEG files per merge, with ghost reduction, plus a way to expand the range of a single photo. It runs on macOS and Windows and as a plug-in for Lightroom Classic and Photoshop, and the Desktop Only plan is $129.00 one-time. Skylum says HDR Merge does not batch merge multiple bracket sets, so a full property means merging view by view, then syncing edits across the results.

Offers:
- Up to 10 brackets per merge
- Single-photo range expansion
- Plug-in for Lightroom Classic and Photoshop
- One-time payment with a year of upgrades

Limits:
- No batch merging of multiple sets
- Upgrades cost extra after the first year
- The pricing page does not say which plans include HDR Merge

Price: $129.00 one-time, Desktop Only (checked 2026-10-12)

### 4. easyHDR 3: Best lifetime license with lens correction

easyHDR 3 combines bracketed exposures, tone maps single photos and develops RAW, with alignment, ghost removal, masks, lens correction, 3D LUTs, batch processing and a Lightroom plug-in. The license is lifetime with free updates, in a home edition and a commercial edition with identical features. Its price is loaded by a checkout script and did not appear on the purchase page, so check it before you plan around it. Real estate appears on its site only in a customer testimonial.

Offers:
- Bracket merging and single-photo tone mapping
- Batch processing
- Lens correction and 3D LUTs
- Lifetime license with free updates

Limits:
- Price not shown on the purchase page
- Commercial use needs the commercial edition
- No real estate presets described

Price: Not shown on the purchase page (loaded at checkout) (checked 2026-10-12)

### 5. Affinity: Best free option

Affinity, now by Canva, is free with no restrictions on its tools once you sign in with a Canva account. It lists HDR merge among its stacking features, RAW development with lens profiles and noise reduction, and batch processing with recordable macros. It runs on Windows and macOS. Its newer HDR features based on a single image are limited to paid Canva accounts. For a photographer who wants a capable merge without a subscription or license, it is the obvious starting point.

Offers:
- Free, including HDR merge
- RAW development with lens profiles
- Batch processing with recordable macros
- Windows and macOS

Limits:
- Needs a Canva account
- No real estate presets or interior guidance described
- Newer single-image HDR features need paid Canva

Price: Free (checked 2026-10-12)

### 6. darktable: Best open source raw workflow

darktable is an open source raw developer under GPL 3.0 whose create HDR action merges selected raw files into a new DNG in the library. Its manual is candid about the limits: it can only create HDR images from raw files, and the images need to be properly aligned, which in practice means a sturdy tripod. It runs on Linux, Windows and Apple silicon Macs. For a tripod-based interior shooter on a budget it works; for handheld brackets it is the wrong tool.

Offers:
- Open source, GPL 3.0
- Merges raw brackets to DNG
- Linux, Windows and Apple silicon Macs

Limits:
- HDR only from raw files
- No automatic alignment described: brackets must be aligned
- No official Intel Mac releases

Price: Open source (GPL 3.0); no price stated (checked 2026-10-12)

## Best for each need

- **Bright windows in dark rooms, shot with many brackets**: Unlimited brackets and interior presets.
- **Merging without leaving your Lightroom catalog**: The merged DNG lands next to the brackets.
- **A one-time editor that also handles single frames**: HDR Merge plus single-photo range expansion.
- **Lens correction and batch work in a lifetime license**: Both are listed features.
- **Spending nothing**: Free, with HDR merge and batch macros.
- **Finishing the merged set so every room matches**: It takes the exported images and returns the set with balanced exposure and consistent color.

## What to check before you buy HDR software

- **Count your brackets**: A room with a bright window often needs five or more exposures to hold the view and the shadows. Software that caps brackets low, or that cannot merge handheld sets cleanly, will cost you reshoots.
- **Test on your worst room**: Trials are easy to find here: Photomatix's trial does not expire and easyHDR has a watermarked demo. Merge the darkest room with the brightest window from a recent shoot, not a sample image.
- **Think about the whole property**: A 30-view listing is 30 merges. Batch merging, presets and synced edits decide whether HDR software saves your evening or fills it.
- **Plan the step after the merge**: A merge balances one frame. Matching white balance and brightness across every room is a separate pass, worked through manually in your editor or handed to a finishing service.
- **Avoid the overcooked look**: Heavy tone mapping makes rooms look painted and can misrepresent a property. Start from natural presets, keep halos away from window frames, and judge on a calibrated screen.
- **Check the platform**: darktable has no official Intel Mac build, Affinity needs a Canva account, and Lightroom Classic is desktop only. Make sure the program runs where you edit.

## Questions about HDR software for real estate

### What is the best HDR software for real estate photography?

Photomatix Pro, for most interior shooters: it merges as many brackets as you need from RAW or JPEG, ships interior presets and costs $99 once. Lightroom Classic is the better choice if you already edit in an Adobe catalog.

### Is there free HDR software for real estate?

Yes. Affinity is free and lists HDR merge and batch macros, and darktable is open source and merges aligned raw files. easyHDR also offers a free legacy version, easyHDR BASIC 2.

### How many brackets do I need for interiors?

HDRsoft recommends at least 5 brackets at 2 EV spacing, or 9 at 1 EV, for high-contrast interiors. Fewer can work in evenly lit rooms.

### Does NovaHDR merge brackets?

No. NovaHDR does not merge brackets or accept RAW files. Merge in the software of your choice, export one JPEG, PNG or WebP per view, and NovaHDR finishes the set with balanced exposure and consistent color.

### Is Aurora HDR still available?

Skylum says Aurora HDR has been replaced by Luminar and no longer receives updates, though it can still be downloaded and used with Luminar. Luminar Neo's HDR Merge is its successor.

### Can Lightroom Classic replace dedicated HDR software?

For many shooters, yes. Its HDR Photo Merge aligns, deghosts and writes an editable DNG. Dedicated programs like Photomatix add interior presets and unlimited brackets.

### What do I do after the merge?

Correct white balance, set exposure and match each room to the next so the listing reads as one home. You can do that in your editor, or send the exported set to NovaHDR and get it back in 24 to 72 hours after you send the property for your final review.

### When was this checked?

Vendor pages were read on October 12, 2026, and Adobe's HDR help page from an archived copy dated August 21, 2026. Prices are rechecked by November 12, 2026.
