# Fluorescent lighting in property photos: green tints and flat light

Fluorescent tubes and compact fluorescent bulbs make light from a mix of narrow color bands rather than a smooth spectrum, so cameras often record a green or magenta tint that eyes barely notice. Their light is also flat and shadowless, and older tubes can flicker at fast shutter speeds. They are common in garages, basements, laundry rooms, offices and older kitchens. NovaHDR finishes the property as a set with consistent color from room to room and a natural look; turning tubes off and using daylight or flash on site is still the cleanest way to avoid the tint.

The fixtures stay in the photo as they are: the finishing does not swap or hide them.

## Sending rooms with fluorescent fixtures

1. **Choose the light, then export** Decide per room whether the tubes stay on, shoot a test frame, and export one JPEG, PNG or WebP per view.
2. **Upload the garage with the house** Add every room to one property, up to 50 photos, so the tube-lit spaces are finished alongside the living areas.
3. **Send and check the neutrals** Use One Property, a plan or a credit and send the property for editing. Look at white walls in the garage and laundry when the finished photos arrive, 24 to 72 hours after you send the property.

## Handling fluorescent fixtures on site

Fluorescent light is easy to fix at the switch and hard to judge on the camera screen. These habits help.

- **Take a test frame first**: Check the white wall on the screen at high zoom. A green or magenta tint shows more clearly there than on the whole frame.
- **Turn them off when daylight is enough**: In laundry rooms and kitchens with windows, the room often looks better without the tubes.
- **Use a custom white balance**: A gray card frame under the tubes gives a better neutral than any preset.
- **Watch for flicker**: At fast shutter speeds older tubes can produce bands or frame to frame color changes. A slower shutter on a tripod avoids it.
- **Do not mix with warm lamps**: Tubes beside warm bulbs give a frame two very different colors. Use one or the other.
- **Replace dead tubes**: A missing or dim tube in a row looks neglected in a listing photo. Ask the agent before the shoot.

## Why fluorescent light photographs badly

- **Spiky spectrum**: Fluorescent light is made of narrow color bands, which can push camera color toward green or magenta.
- **Low color rendering**: Many older tubes render colors less accurately than daylight, so wood and skin tones look dull.
- **Flicker**: Mains powered tubes can pulse, which shows up as banding at fast shutter speeds.
- **Flat light**: Overhead tubes light everything evenly from above, so rooms lack depth and shadows.
- **Consistent color across the set**: NovaHDR finishes the property as a set with consistent color from room to room.
- **Capture choices stay yours**: You decide which lights are on at capture, and you keep the final review before delivery.

## Where fluorescent light shows up and what to do

| Space | Typical problem | What to do on site |
|---|---|---|
| Garage | Green tint, flat light | Door open for daylight, or custom white balance |
| Basement | Dim tubes, gray walls | Bounced flash with tubes on or off |
| Laundry room | Tint on white appliances | Tubes off if there is a window |
| Office or commercial | Rows of tubes, flicker | Slower shutter on a tripod |
| Older kitchen | Under-cabinet tubes clash with lamps | One type of light per frame |
| Workshop | Uneven, missing tubes | Replace dead tubes before the shoot |

## What does fluorescent light mean in photography?

Fluorescent light comes from tubes or compact bulbs that produce narrow bands of color, often recorded by cameras as a green or magenta tint with flat, shadowless light. In property photos it appears in garages, basements, laundries and commercial spaces. Photographers manage it by switching it off, using flash or setting a custom white balance; NovaHDR then finishes the exported photos, tube-lit rooms included, for color that is consistent across the property and a natural look.

_It is not replacing the fixtures. Tubes and panels stay in the photo._

## Fluorescent light questions

### Why does my garage look green in photos?

Fluorescent tubes often have a spectrum that pushes the camera toward green. A custom white balance or turning the tubes off helps.

### Is flicker visible in still photos?

Yes, at fast shutter speeds it can cause banding or color shifts. A slower shutter on a tripod avoids it.

### Should I leave the tubes on in a laundry room with a window?

Often not. Daylight alone usually gives cleaner color, as long as the room is not too dark.

### Will the garage match the living room after finishing?

The property is finished as one set with consistent color from room to room, and a clean capture makes that more natural.

### Are commercial spaces with fluorescent panels fine to send?

Yes. Any photos you export as JPEG, PNG or WebP can go in a property of up to 50 photos.

### What does a single property cost?

One property of up to 50 photos is $29 one-time for one property.
