# Harsh sunlight in real estate photos: hot spots, deep shadows and timing

Direct, high sun gives real estate photos the widest contrast of the day: bright rectangles on floors and furniture, near black shadows beside them, glaring windows and squinting facades with dark eaves. The range is often more than a single frame can hold, so detail is lost at one end or the other. NovaHDR finishes the property as a set with balanced exposure and consistent color, aiming for a natural look. It works with the detail you captured, so timing the shoot and protecting the brightest areas on site matter more than anything after.

Sun patches and shadows are balanced, not erased: the light still looks like the light of that day.

## Sending a property shot in strong sun

1. **Bracket the bright rooms, then merge** Where sun patches and shadows share a frame, shoot brackets and merge them in your own software. Export one JPEG, PNG or WebP for each view.
2. **Upload sunny and shaded rooms together** Put the whole house in one property, up to 50 photos, so the sun-filled south rooms and the shaded north rooms are finished side by side.
3. **Send the property and check the hot spots** Pay with One Property or use a plan credit, then send the property for editing. Expect the finished photos 24 to 72 hours after you send the property, then look at the brightest floors first in your review.

## Handling hard sun on site

Harsh light is mostly a scheduling problem. These habits keep it manageable.

- **Shoot each side out of direct sun**: Plan the route so rooms facing the sun are photographed when it has moved off their windows.
- **Use sheers to soften sun patches**: Drawn sheer curtains turn hard rectangles on the floor into soft, even light.
- **Frame out the brightest patch**: A small change of angle can keep a blazing sun patch on a rug out of the composition.
- **Expose for the highlights outdoors**: On facades, protect the bright siding and roof; shadow detail under eaves is easier to work with than clipped white walls.
- **Fill shadows with flash**: Bounced flash lifts the dark side of a room so the range between patch and shadow is smaller.
- **Mind the shadow of the house**: In the middle of the day the house shades its own front at certain orientations. Check where it falls before choosing the hero angle.

## Why harsh sun is hard to finish

- **Extreme contrast**: Direct sun can make a floor patch many times brighter than the shaded wall beside it.
- **Clipped highlights**: Blown sun patches and white siding hold no texture, so they cannot be brought back later.
- **Hard edged shadows**: Sharp shadows from window frames and trees break up rooms and facades.
- **Midday color**: High sun is relatively neutral in color but hard; morning and late afternoon light is warmer and softer.
- **Balanced across the set**: The south rooms full of sun and the shaded rooms across the hall are finished as one property by NovaHDR, with balanced exposure and consistent color.
- **Lost detail stays lost**: Editing works with what was captured. Areas that are pure white in the source stay white.

## Harsh sun problems and what to capture

| Area | Problem in strong sun | What to capture or send |
|---|---|---|
| Floors and rugs | Bright sun rectangles | Sheers drawn, or a later time slot |
| Shaded corners | Near black areas | Bounced flash or a merged bracket |
| Windows facing the sun | Glare and white glass | That room shot after the sun moves |
| Front facade | White siding, dark eaves | Exposure that protects the siding |
| Pool and patio | Glare off water and paving | A lower sun angle, or a polarizer |
| Landscaping | Harsh shadows from trees | Wider views when the yard is in shade |

## What is harsh light in real estate photography?

Harsh light is direct, undiffused sunlight that creates very bright highlights and dark, sharp edged shadows in the same frame. In real estate photos it usually means sun patches on floors, glaring windows and contrasty exteriors near midday. Photographers manage it with timing, sheers, flash and bracketing; NovaHDR then finishes the exported set for balanced exposure and consistent color.

_It is not relighting the scene. No shade, clouds or new light are added._

## Harsh sunlight questions

### What time of day avoids harsh sun for interiors?

It depends on orientation. Shoot rooms when the sun is not shining straight through their windows, often morning for west rooms and afternoon for east rooms.

### Can a blown sun patch on the floor be recovered?

No. A patch that is pure white in the source has no texture to recover. Draw sheers or shoot when the sun has moved.

### Do I need to bracket in strong sun?

Often, yes. Merge the brackets yourself first and send one exported image per view.

### Will the shadows look flat after finishing?

The aim is a natural look, so the room still reads as sunlit. Balanced exposure brings the extremes closer without erasing the light.

### Will sunny and shady rooms match in the gallery?

They are finished together as one set, with consistent color and balanced exposure from room to room.

### Does a sunny shoot use more than one credit?

No. Each property of up to 50 photos uses one credit, whatever the weather.
