# Mixed lighting in real estate photos: daylight, lamps and LEDs in one frame

Mixed lighting means two or more light sources with different color temperatures in the same frame: blue daylight from a window, orange incandescent table lamps, greenish tubes in the garage. A camera can only be balanced for one of them, so the others show up as warm or cool patches on the same white wall. NovaHDR finishes the property as a set with balanced exposure and consistent color from room to room, so the house reads as one place rather than a run of differently tinted rooms. The cleaner the light on site, the more natural that finished set looks.

The fixtures stay in the photo exactly as they were: the work is exposure and color, not swapping bulbs.

## Sending a property shot under mixed light

1. **Settle the light, then export** Turn off or match the sources that fight each other, fix your white balance, and export one JPEG, PNG or WebP per angle. If you bracketed, merge the frames in your own software first.
2. **Put the whole house in one property** Upload every room together, up to 50 photos, so the lamp-lit den and the daylight kitchen are finished side by side rather than one at a time.
3. **Send, wait, then compare the whites** Send the property for editing after choosing One Property, a plan or a credit. Finished photos land 24 to 72 hours after you send the property; scroll the set and compare ceilings and trim from room to room before it goes to your client.

## Ways photographers tame mixed light on site

The most effective mixed lighting fixes happen before the shutter. These are common, practical choices.

- **Switch off the odd one out**: If a single cool ceiling fixture fights warm lamps and daylight, turning it off often simplifies the whole frame more than any later adjustment.
- **Keep lamps on for warmth, but few**: One or two lit lamps add life and a focal point. Every lamp in the room switched on adds orange pools across the walls.
- **Shoot daylight rooms while daylight is strong**: When the window is the main source, small warm lamps read as accents. Late in the day the balance tips and the lamps take over.
- **Use flash to even out the mix**: A bounced flash, close to daylight in color, can overpower small warm sources and give the room one dominant color of light.
- **Lock white balance for each room**: Auto white balance shifts between frames as the mix changes, so two angles of the same room can disagree. A fixed setting keeps them comparable.
- **Watch the green fixtures**: Older fluorescent tubes and some cheap LEDs add a green or magenta tint that is hard to see by eye. A test frame shows it quickly.

## Why mixed light is hard to finish

- **Different sources, different colors**: Incandescent and many warm LEDs sit near 2700K, while daylight from a window is far bluer, so one white balance cannot match both.
- **The camera sees what eyes ignore**: People adapt to mixed light in a room and see white walls as white; a sensor records the warm and cool patches as they are.
- **Patches, not a single cast**: Mixed light produces zones of color in one frame, which is harder to settle than a room that is evenly too warm or too cool.
- **Room to room inconsistency**: Each room in a house tends to have its own mix, so a gallery shot without a plan can jump between warm and cool.
- **One finished set**: NovaHDR finishes the property as a set, with balanced exposure and consistent color from room to room.
- **Fixtures are left as they are**: No lamps, bulbs or fixtures are added, removed or changed; the finishing is exposure and color with a natural look.

## Mixed light sources and what to do about them

| Light source | What it adds to the frame | What to do on site |
|---|---|---|
| Window daylight | Cool, blue light near the glass | Shoot while it is the dominant source |
| Incandescent or warm LED lamps | Orange pools on walls and ceilings | Keep one or two on, switch the rest off |
| Recessed cool LEDs | Bluish hotspots from above | Turn them off if lamps carry the room |
| Fluorescent tubes | Green or magenta tint | Turn them off or take a test frame |
| Under-cabinet strips | Cool or warm bands on counters | Match them to the room or switch them off |
| Bounced flash | Even, near daylight fill | Use it to give the room one main color of light |

## What does mixed lighting mean in real estate photography?

Mixed lighting is any frame lit by sources of different color temperature at once, typically window daylight plus warm bulbs plus cool LEDs or tubes. Photographers manage it on site by choosing which lights stay on, using flash and fixing white balance. NovaHDR then finishes the exported set for balanced exposure and consistent color, so the rooms read as one property.

_It is not relighting a room. No light sources, lamps or glow are added._

## Mixed lighting questions

### Should I turn the lamps on or off before I shoot?

Usually a mix of both: one or two lamps for warmth, the rest off. Whatever you choose, keep the same approach in every room so the gallery agrees with itself.

### Will a room lit by daylight and orange bulbs match the other rooms?

The property is finished as a set for consistent color from room to room. The less the sources fight in the source frame, the more natural the finished room looks.

### Can finishing make a bulb look like it is off?

No. Lights that are on in your photo stay on. Decide which fixtures to use before you shoot.

### Is mixed light worse in some rooms than others?

Yes. Kitchens, bathrooms and garages tend to combine the most sources, while bedrooms are often lit mainly by the window.

### What files can I send from a mixed lighting shoot?

One JPEG, PNG or WebP per view, either a single exposure or a merged bracket export. RAW files and loose brackets are not accepted.

### What does a monthly plan cost if I shoot several houses?

The Solo plan is $79 per month, 5 property credits. Each property of up to 50 photos uses one credit.
