PHOTOSHOP FOR LISTINGS

Photoshop for real estate photos: what deserves layers, and what does not

Real estate photo editing in Photoshop is where photographers blend flash and ambient frames, paint in window views from a darker exposure, remove a stray cord or reflection, and correct color casts with masks and adjustment layers. It is precise and slow. The blending and retouching often need Photoshop. The final matching of exposure and color across thirty rooms usually does not. Export your finished frames and NovaHDR returns the set balanced and consistent from room to room in 24 to 72 hours after you send the property.

Use Photoshop for the frames that need hands-on work. Send the whole set for the exposure and color pass.

What a Photoshop real estate edit usually includes

A Photoshop real estate edit is layer based work on individual listing photos: stacking a flash frame over an ambient frame and masking the blend, painting window detail in from a darker bracket, using Curves, Levels and Hue/Saturation layers to fix color casts, cleaning small distractions with healing tools, and sometimes Camera Raw filters for global tone. Actions can automate repeated steps, but each blend still needs checking because every room and window is different.

Blending and compositing combine several frames into one. NovaHDR does not blend or merge frames and does not retouch content. It finishes the exposure and color of the images you export, across the whole property.

Why matching a set in Photoshop takes so long

Photoshop is built around one document at a time. Even with actions and batch processing, a color correction that works on the living room needs a different mask or opacity on the kitchen, because the light and the surfaces differ. Matching color across a set often ends with several documents open side by side and adjustments nudged by eye.

Blended frames add their own variation. A flash layer carries a different color temperature from the ambient frame, and the opacity of the blend changes from room to room. Two rooms blended the same way can still come out in different whites.

None of that is wasted on the hero shots of a high end listing. For the other thirty frames, it is the kind of repetitive pass NovaHDR is built to take.

A realistic split for a listing

On a typical listing, a handful of frames deserve full Photoshop treatment: the hero living room, the kitchen with the view, the main bedroom. The rest need clean exposure and matching color more than they need layers.

Treating every frame like a hero frame is where evenings disappear. Keep the layer work for the frames that sell the property, export everything, and send the set for the exposure and color pass so the hero frames and the hallways look like the same house.

A Photoshop workflow with a handoff at the end

Blend and retouch where it matters

Do your flash blends, window composites and cleanup in Photoshop as usual.

Save JPEG, PNG or WebP files, up to 50 MiB each and up to 50 per property.

  3. 03

    Upload and send the property

Upload in the browser, use One Property or a plan credit, then send the property for editing.

What NovaHDR does with your Photoshop exports

Finishes the set as a whole

Exposure and color are balanced across every room so the listing reads as one property.

Keeps it natural

Interiors opened up enough to read the space, without the grey, flat look of overdone HDR.

Respects your blends

Works from single exposures and from merged or blended exports.

Leaves the content alone

No rooms, objects or window detail are added; the work is exposure and color.

You approve the final set

The photographer reviews before client delivery.

What NovaHDR does not take from Photoshop

Blending and merging

Flash and ambient blends and bracket merges stay in your own workflow.

Retouching

Object removal, reflections, staging and sky work are not part of NovaHDR.

Layered files

Upload flattened JPEG, PNG or WebP images; PSD, TIFF and raw files are not accepted.

Missing detail

If a window is white in every frame, there is nothing to bring back.

Questions about editing real estate photos in Photoshop

Do real estate photographers edit in Photoshop or Lightroom?

Many use both: Lightroom for culling, development and merging, Photoshop for blends and retouching. NovaHDR takes the exposure and color pass for the set after either.

Is flambient editing a Photoshop job?

Usually, yes. Blending flash and ambient frames is layer and mask work. NovaHDR does not blend frames; it finishes the blended exports. See flambient vs HDR for real estate.

Can NovaHDR open my PSD files?

No. Flatten and export JPEG, PNG or WebP files. Each photo can be up to 50 MiB and a property up to 2 GiB.

Will NovaHDR remove objects I missed in Photoshop?

No. The NovaHDR pass covers exposure and color, nothing more. Object removal and other retouching stay in Photoshop or with a retouching service.

How do I keep window views after the color pass?

Composite the view in Photoshop if you need it. NovaHDR works with the detail in the image you upload and cannot recover a window that is completely white.

What does it cost per property?

One Property is $29 one-time for one property for up to 50 photos; monthly plans include property credits that roll over up to a cap.

How long until I get the set back?

The finished photos arrive 24 to 72 hours after you send the property, whichever day you finished your Photoshop work.

Should every listing photo go through Photoshop?

Usually not. Reserve layer work for the frames that need blending, window composites or cleanup. The rest can go from your raw processor straight to export, and then into the set you send.

Your next client handoff

Blend in Photoshop. Send the set for the finish.

Upload one property's exports and review a set with balanced exposure and consistent color.
