LED LIGHTING

LED lighting in interior photography: warm, cool and tinted whites

LEDs are now the most common light in many homes, and they vary more than they look: warm white near 2700K, neutral near 4000K and cool daylight bulbs near 5000K or higher can all hang in one house, sometimes in one room. Cheaper LEDs can also add a slight green or magenta tint, and dimmed LEDs can flicker on camera. Every LED-lit room is finished in the same set, and NovaHDR keeps color consistent between them with a natural look. Matching or switching off the odd fixture on site still gives the cleanest start.

Fixtures stay as installed: nothing is swapped, added or hidden.

One property covers up to 50 photos.

Sending LED-lit rooms

  1. 01

    Match the fixtures, then export

Turn off LEDs that clash with the room's main light, set your white balance, and export one JPEG, PNG or WebP per view.

  2. 02

Upload every room in one property

Add up to 50 photos together. LED color varies from room to room, which is exactly why the set is finished as a whole.

  3. 03

    Send and scan for mismatches

Choose One Property, a plan or a credit, then send the property for editing. When the finished set lands, 24 to 72 hours after you send the property, scan the ceilings for leftover mismatches.

LED habits that help the finished set

LEDs are efficient and convenient, and inconsistent from one fixture to the next. These on-site habits matter.

Check every fixture in the room

A cool LED in one pendant among warm ones shows as a blue spot. Swap or switch it off before shooting.

Watch strip lighting

Under-cabinet and cove strips are often a different white from the ceiling lights. Decide whether they stay on.

Avoid dimmed LEDs at fast shutter speeds

Many dimmers pulse the LED, which can show as bands. Use full brightness or a slower shutter.

Turn off color changing lights

RGB strips set to purple or blue tint the whole room. Set them to white or off.

Use one white balance per room

With mixed LED whites, pick the dominant fixture type and set color for it.

Note smart bulbs

Smart bulbs may be set to odd colors by the owner. Reset them to a warm or neutral white.

Why LED light is tricky to photograph

Many shades of white

LEDs are sold as warm, neutral and cool white, from about 2700K to 6500K.

Tints beyond warm and cool

Lower quality LEDs can lean green or magenta, which white balance presets do not address.

Dimming flicker

Dimmed LEDs often pulse rapidly, causing banding at fast shutter speeds.

Color rendering varies

LEDs with a low CRI make wood, fabric and paint look duller than they are.

One consistent set

Rooms with warm, neutral and cool LEDs are finished as one property, so NovaHDR delivers balanced exposure and color that holds steady from room to room.

Fixtures stay as they are

The finishing is exposure and color with a natural look; no fixtures are changed.

How does LED lighting affect interior photography?

LED lighting affects interior photos through its color temperature, which ranges from warm to cool white, its tint, which can lean green or magenta, and its flicker when dimmed. A house often mixes several kinds. Photographers handle it by matching or switching off fixtures and fixing white balance; NovaHDR finishes the resulting photos as one property, so rooms with different fixtures still arrive with consistent color and a natural look.

It is not replacing the lighting. LEDs that were on stay on in the photo.

LED lighting questions

Why does one pendant look blue in my kitchen photo?

It probably has a cooler LED than the others. Swap it or turn it off before the shoot.

Do LED strips cause banding in photos?

Dimmed LED strips can, at fast shutter speeds. Use full brightness or a slower shutter on a tripod.

Should I set white balance for warm or cool LEDs?

Set it for the dominant fixture in the room, and keep it the same for each angle of that room.

Will rooms lit by different LEDs match in the finished set?

The property is finished as a set with consistent color from room to room. Matching fixtures on site gives the most natural result.

Which files can I upload from an LED-lit shoot?

JPEG, PNG or WebP, up to 50 MiB per photo and 2 GiB per property.

What does the Pro plan cost for regular shoots?

The Pro plan is $199 per month, 15 property credits; each property uses one credit.
