TUNGSTEN LIGHT
Tungsten light in interior photography: warm bulbs, orange walls
Tungsten and halogen bulbs, and the warm LEDs made to imitate them, glow at a low color temperature, roughly 2700K to 3200K. Eyes adapt and see white walls as white; a camera set for daylight records them as orange or yellow. Where tungsten meets window daylight, one side of a room turns warm and the other cool. NovaHDR finishes the property as a set with consistent color from room to room and a natural look, so lamp-lit rooms sit comfortably beside daylight ones. A white balance chosen for the dominant light on site gives the most natural start.
Warm lamps keep their glow: the aim is a room that still feels lit, not a cold one.

Sending rooms lit by warm bulbs
- 01
Set color for the bulbs, then export
Where lamps are the main light, set a warm Kelvin value or a gray card white balance, and export one JPEG, PNG or WebP per view.
- 02
Upload lamp-lit and daylight rooms together
Add the full property, up to 50 photos. The evening den and the sunny kitchen are finished as one set rather than as strangers.
- 03
Send and compare the warm rooms
Select One Property or a credit from your plan and send the property for editing. Your finished set is due 24 to 72 hours after you send the property; compare lamp-lit rooms against the bright ones in your review.
Working with tungsten on site
Warm light is attractive in person and stubborn on camera. These choices make it behave.
Balance for the bulbs when they lead
In a room lit mostly by lamps, a warm white balance keeps walls close to white while lamp shades still glow.
Keep a little warmth
Fully neutralized lamp light can look cold and clinical. Many photographers leave lamps slightly warm on purpose.
Switch off the competing source
If a cool ceiling LED fights the warm lamps, turning it off removes the second color.
Shoot daylight rooms while the window wins
Warm lamps are a nice accent in daytime. After sunset they take over and the room turns orange.
Watch dimmers
Dimmed tungsten bulbs glow even warmer and redder, so set dimmers the same in every frame.
Mind halogen hot spots
Halogen downlights make bright circles on walls. Turn some off or angle the camera to reduce them.
Why tungsten light is tricky
Low color temperature
Tungsten bulbs sit roughly between 2700K and 3200K, much warmer than daylight.
Dimming shifts color
Dimmed incandescent bulbs move further toward orange and red.
Warm LEDs imitate it
Many household LEDs are labeled warm white at about 2700K to copy the tungsten look.
Clashes with daylight
Next to a window, tungsten creates warm and cool zones that a single white balance cannot match.
Consistent color across rooms
Lamp-lit and daylight rooms go through the same finishing, so NovaHDR returns the house with color that stays consistent between them and a natural look.
Lamps stay as photographed
No lamps are switched off, added or removed; the work is exposure and color.
Tungsten situations and what to do
| Situation | What the camera records | What to do on site |
|---|---|---|
| Lamps as the only light | Orange walls on daylight balance | A warm white balance for the room |
| Lamps beside a window | Warm side and cool side | Pick the dominant source, switch off extras |
| Dimmed bulbs | Deep orange glow | Dimmers set the same in every frame |
| Halogen downlights | Bright circles on walls | Some lights off or a new angle |
| Evening interiors | Lamps take over the room | Shoot key rooms before sunset |
| Lamp shades | Glowing hot spots | Lower brightness or a wider frame |
What is tungsten light in photography?
Tungsten light is the warm light from incandescent and halogen bulbs, with a color temperature around 2700K to 3200K. In real estate photos it turns white surfaces orange unless white balance is set for it, and clashes with window daylight in mixed rooms. Photographers handle it with white balance and light choices; NovaHDR finishes the exported set for consistent color and a natural look.
It is not swapping the bulbs. Fixtures and their glow stay in the photo.
Tungsten light questions
Why do my lamp-lit rooms look orange?
The camera is set for daylight while the room is lit by warm bulbs near 2700K. Set a warm white balance for lamp-lit rooms.
Should tungsten rooms look completely neutral?
Usually not. A hint of warmth keeps the room feeling lived in, which suits a natural look.
Will a warm bedroom match the daylight living room in the gallery?
The set is finished for consistent color from room to room. A sensible white balance on site makes the match more natural.
Do warm LEDs behave like tungsten?
Mostly, yes. Warm white LEDs are designed to look similar, though some carry a slight green or magenta tint.
Do I need to send brackets for lamp-lit rooms?
No. Send one JPEG, PNG or WebP per view; if you bracket, merge the frames yourself first.
What does the Solo plan include for warm-lit evening shoots?
The Solo plan is $79 per month, 5 property credits, and each property of up to 50 photos uses one credit.
